What a dental implant actually is
A dental implant is a small titanium post that acts as the root of a new tooth. Once it integrates with your jawbone — a process called osseointegration — it anchors a custom crown that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth. Unlike a bridge, an implant doesn't require grinding down healthy neighboring teeth, and unlike a denture, it won't shift or click.
Why "digitally guided" matters
Traditional implant placement relies on the surgeon's freehand technique and a 2D X-ray. Digitally guided implant surgery adds two steps that change the outcome.
First, we take a CBCT scan — a 3D image of your jaw that shows bone volume, sinus floors, and the exact path of key nerves. Second, we plan the implant virtually on a computer, in millimeters, before we touch tissue. A custom surgical guide is then printed so the implant goes exactly where it was planned.
The result: shorter surgical time, less tissue disruption, and predictable positioning that protects long-term aesthetics when the crown goes on.
Who is a candidate?
Most adults with good general health are candidates. A few factors we evaluate at consultation:
- Bone volume. Enough jawbone is needed to hold the implant. If the area has been missing a tooth for years, a small bone graft may be done first.
- Gum health. Active periodontal disease is treated before implant placement.
- Overall health. Uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smoking, and certain medications slow healing and affect success rates — we'll talk through this openly.
What the process looks like
1. Consultation & 3D planning
We do a thorough exam, take a CBCT scan and digital impressions, and build a virtual plan. You'll see exactly what's proposed, in 3D, before anything is scheduled.
2. Surgical placement
Performed in-office under local anesthetic, usually in under an hour for a single implant. The surgical guide ensures the implant goes where it was planned to the millimeter.
3. Healing
Over the next 3–6 months, the implant fuses to your jawbone. You'll wear a temporary in most cases; diet restrictions are minimal after the first week.
4. Final crown
Once osseointegration is confirmed, we attach a custom porcelain crown matched to the shade and shape of your surrounding teeth. You walk out with a tooth that looks like it was always there.
What to expect afterward
Most patients return to normal activity the next day. Mild soreness and swelling are managed with over-the-counter pain relief. We see you back for a healing check, and then at regular maintenance visits so the implant — like your other teeth — gets the monitoring it deserves.
Book a consultation
If you're missing a tooth — or a missing tooth is about to happen — a consultation is the right first step. We'll review your options honestly, including the cases where an implant isn't the best answer.
